A delegation organized by the Ministry of Education visited Germany and the U.K. earlier this month to recruit academic professionals for research and positions at tertiary institutions in Taiwan.

According to the MOE, a group led by its Chief Secretary Lin Po-chiao and comprising senior administrators from 11 local universities held a recruitment event July 19 at TU Dortmund University in western Germany. The delegates promoted openings at their respective institutions and urged the nearly 70 participating students to consider Taiwan in their career plans.

The following day, Lin and representatives from the 11 universities plus National Tsing Hua University staged a similar event at the Woburn House Conference Centre in London that involved around 80 students interested in joining Taiwan’s academic sector. The delegates also shared their personal experiences and held in-depth discussions with the attendees.

During the two events, Lin brought participants up to speed on the government’s latest talent recruitment policies. Taiwan is at a critical junction in terms of promoting higher education and requires professionals in a wide range of disciplines, he said.

Lin encouraged young academics and students from Taiwan pursuing advanced degrees at overseas institutions to return home after finishing their studies, and welcomed professionals from around the world to seek opportunities in Taiwan to inject new vitality into the sector.

As the U.K. is the leading destination in Europe for students from Taiwan, the delegates also touched on the Yushan Fellow Program at the London event. Launched by the MOE in 2018, the project aims to attract outstanding international academics and offers globally competitive benefits in order to strengthen Taiwan’s academic expertise and the global standing of the country’s higher education.
